ISO 9606-1 welder qualification — what it covers and how it lapses

An ISO 9606-1 certificate does not simply expire on a date. It stays valid only while continuity is confirmed at six-month intervals, and it covers a defined range of process, material, thickness, diameter and position.

ISO 9606-1 covers qualification testing of welders for fusion welding of steels. Two things about it catch people out. First, a certificate does not just run to a date — it depends on continuity being confirmed at six-month intervals, and if that confirmation lapses, so does the qualification. Second, it qualifies a range, not a single weld, and that range decides which production work the welder may legally perform.

What the certificate actually covers

Passing a test does not qualify a welder for "welding". It qualifies them within bands defined by a set of variables, each with its own rules for how far the qualification extends:

  • Welding process — process changes generally require requalification; ISO 9606-1 uses the process numbering from ISO 4063 (135 for MAG with solid wire, 141 for TIG, and so on).
  • Product type — plate and pipe, with rules governing when one covers the other, usually tied to diameter.
  • Weld type — butt and fillet, which do not automatically qualify each other.
  • Material group — grouped per ISO/TR 15608, so one test can cover a band of related steels.
  • Filler material and its form — including whether it is solid wire, flux-cored or metal-cored, and shielding gas.
  • Thickness — a band derived from the test piece thickness.
  • Pipe outside diameter — a band derived from the tested diameter.
  • Welding position — with defined rules on which positions cover which others.
  • Weld details — such as backing, single or both sides, and single or multi-layer.

The practical consequence: design the test around the production work you need covered. A test piece chosen for convenience frequently produces a range that misses a chunk of what the welder is then asked to do — and that gap only surfaces during an audit, or when a weld has to be cut out.

Validity and the six-month problem

This is where most non-conformances originate.

An ISO 9606-1 certificate is issued with a validity period, but that validity is conditional. The welder must be working within the qualified range with reasonable continuity, and that continuity must be confirmed and signed at intervals of six months by a responsible person — the welding coordinator or employer. Miss the signature and the qualification is no longer valid, regardless of what the expiry date on the certificate says.

There is also an important nuance about interruptions: if the welder has not used the process within the qualified range for a period exceeding the standard's limit, the qualification for that process lapses. The date on the paper is not the whole story.

Beyond that initial period, the standard provides routes for prolongation rather than a single automatic renewal. The available routes, their conditions, and the evidence they require — including provisions that rely on documented volumetric testing of the welder's production welds — differ between editions of the standard. Check the edition named in your contract. The prolongation provisions are among the most frequently misquoted parts of ISO 9606-1, and they have changed.

Where it differs from ASME IX

Fabricators working to both regimes hit this constantly. ASME IX handles welder performance qualification (WPQ) differently:

Both revolve around a six-month cadence, but the obligations differ: ISO 9606-1 requires a positive, signed confirmation, whereas ASME IX turns on whether the welder has actually used the process. A welder qualified under one is not automatically qualified under the other, and dual-code shops need both records maintained.

How qualifications actually lapse

Rarely through anyone's negligence. The recurring patterns:

  • The six-month signature is missed during holiday, sickness or a site transfer, and nobody notices until the next audit.
  • The welder is assigned outside the qualified range — a thicker section, a different position, a diameter below the qualified band — because whoever allocated the work was looking at a name, not a range.
  • The certificate is filed but its range is not, so the person allocating work has no practical way to check.
  • Prolongation is left too late, and requalification becomes necessary because the window for the easier route closed.
  • Subcontract welders arrive with certificates whose ranges nobody verifies against the actual scope.

Each has the same root cause: the qualification range lives in a PDF in a folder, while the work allocation happens somewhere else entirely.

Practical points

Record the range, not just the certificate. A scanned PDF is evidence, but it cannot be checked against a work order. The variables above need to be data.

Diarise the six-month confirmations, and treat the signature as a real control rather than a formality. It is the single most common finding in this area.

Verify subcontractor certificates against your scope before they weld, not after.

Plan test coupons against production reality. The thickness, diameter and position you test determine the work you can allocate for the next several years.

Confirm the standard edition your contract names. Validity and prolongation provisions differ between editions, and this is the part people most often quote from memory.
